The egg cell, or ovum (plural: ova), is the female reproductive cell (gamete) in most anisogamous organisms, which reproduce sexually with a larger female gamete and a smaller male one. The term is used when the female gamete is non-motile; if the male gamete is motile, the reproduction is classified as oogamous. In animals, egg cells are also called ova, and in vertebrates they are produced by female gonads called ovaries. The fusion of egg and sperm during fertilization forms a diploid zygote, which grows into a new organism.
