Puberty is the process of physical changes through which a child's body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction. It is initiated by hormonal signals from the brain to the gonads, leading to the production of hormones that stimulate growth and transformation of the brain, bones, muscle, blood, skin, hair, breasts, and sex organs. Puberty results in sexual dimorphism through the development of secondary sex characteristics, distinguishing males and females.

Puberty is preceded by adrenarche, marking an increase of adrenal androgen production between ages 6–10, sometimes accompanied by early appearance of axillary and pubic hair. The onset of puberty is associated with high GnRH pulsing, which precedes the rise in sex hormones LH and FSH. Leptin may be a cause of the GnRH rise, as individuals deficient in leptin fail to initiate puberty. A mutation in genes encoding neurokinin B and its receptor can also alter the timing of puberty, possibly by regulating kisspeptin secretion.

This shift may be due to improved nutrition, increased weight and fat deposition, or exposure to endocrine disruptors such as xenoestrogens. However, more modern archaeological research suggests that the rate of puberty as it occurs now is comparable to other time periods, with delays in later stages like menarche correlated with severe environmental conditions such as poverty, poor nutrition, and air pollution. Early onset of puberty in females can be psychologically damaging, leading to lower self-esteem, depression, and increased risk of alcohol and drug use, while later onset generally produces positive outcomes. In males, early onset has been associated with positive outcomes such as leadership in high school and success in adulthood, though recent studies reveal risks and problems. The word puberty derives from the Latin puberatum (age of maturity) and describes physical changes to sexual maturation, not the psychosocial and cultural maturation denoted by adolescent development.
